Steve
Gardner
Partner, FIVE
STAR Speakers & Trainers
Steve has been working in the speaking
and training industry since 1991, and all but three of
those years have been spent at FIVE STAR. He has sold
more than $9,000,000 worth of speakers, trainers and
related services. Additionally, he has personally seen
more than 2,000 speakers in his career. Steve bought the
company with business partner, Paul Schmidt, in February
of 2005.
Steve has seen nearly every type of
successful speaker, worked with nearly every type of
client and understands the marketplace as well as anyone
in the industry.
Because of his background, Steve can show
every speaker how to be dramatically more successful
within their existing marketplace and/or their dream
marketplace. He does not have a one-size-fits-all
approach for professional speakers. What works for one
person, doesn’t necessarily work for everyone!
Steve has spoken at several National
Speakers Association chapters, the NSA Eastern Workshop,
Annual Convention, and NSA University where he was part
of the 3-member faculty that taught professional
speakers how to effectively brand themselves.

The 5 Keys to Building a Speaking Career:
April
6-8,
2008
The Woodlands Resort
& Conference Center
2301
N. Millbend Drive
The Woodlands (Houston), TX 77380
Who Should Attend?
This 3-day session is geared for individuals who are
interested in learning how to build and grow a thriving,
professional speaking career…one that is targeted to
their specific dreams and goals
or for current speakers who are ready to take their
business to the next level!
The
expertise of your coaches covers many facets of being a
professional speaker. We are specifically reaching
out to speakers, athletes and corporate executives who
want to develop a vibrant, successful professional
speaking career. Our team of experts will guide you
through the key strategies of taking your “story" and
turning it into a highly successful business.
What Will You Learn
There are 5 key areas you must focus on in order to
develop a prosperous speaking career.
1. Presentation Skills
Your ability to clearly communicate your
story is the difference between something you do for
fun, and something you do professionally. This is a
critically important piece of your career because it is
the primary product and the foundation of your business.
Make no mistake, the structure of your presentation
matters. It has to be good!
During this session you will learn how to…
-
Identify the simple guidelines for creating a powerful
presentation
-
Generate “HOT" topic ideas
-
Mindmap your presentation
-
Create powerful openings and closings
-
Use the BAIR test to audit your presentations
-
Impact audiences emotionally and logically
2. Marketing and Sales
As important as speaking skills are, the
most successful speakers in this business are not
necessarily those who are best on stage…they are the
ones who are the best at marketing and selling their
services. There are two aspects to building a great
brand: The first includes all your marketing materials
(website, products, materials, etc.) and the second
includes how you build relationships using your brand.
The difference between the most successful speakers and
those who feel stuck at their current level is this: a
successful speaker knows who they are, what they do and
who they do it for…and they communicate it consistently
and with great value. We will share with you the best
practices used by top professionals in the industry.
During this session you will learn how to…
-
Build your personal brand
-
Sell yourself to the right people at the
right time and in the right way
-
Identify what marketing materials are
required, important and even what is
irrelevant
-
Develop a great website that passively
drives business for you
-
Leverage your existing contacts in order
to begin and grow your speaking
career
-
Price yourself and identify what you’re
worth according to what the
marketplace demands
-
Negotiate fees consistently and to create
leverage
3. Creating Multiple Income Streams
If you knew you could grow your income by 20% with
minimal additional effort, would you be willing to do
it? Most people would say “Absolutely!" But most people
within this business don’t understand how to develop an
effective product strategy. We will help you understand
the how’s and why’s of building effective products to
deliver your message.
During this session you will learn how to…
-
Identify the 11 different types of
products you can develop
-
Identify the four things products
actually do…and why they’re important
-
Create products quickly and easily
to sell tomorrow
-
Use products to create speaking
opportunities
-
Identify what publishers are looking for
and determine how to position yourself
for greater success
4. Working with Bureaus and Agents
Some speakers in this business want to exclusively work
with speaker bureaus to build their career. Some
speakers want to book directly, and a majority like to
have a mix of direct vs. bureau bookings. Whichever path
you choose, there are definitely ways to work with
bureaus…and many more ways to NOT work with bureaus and
agents.
During this session you will learn how to…
-
Understand this distribution channel
-
Identify the five things you can do to a
build the relationship
-
Identify the four things you can do to
destroy it
-
Provide the right materials
-
Create a long-term relationship strategy
with bureaus that will provide constant
income
5. Running it Like a Business
We have seen countless speakers who are good at each of
the four areas above literally sabotage their careers
because they don’t treat the back office with the same
level of focus. We have seen it bankrupt speakers who
are generating 6-figure incomes! The back office systems
and procedures must be in place and effective! There are
more pot-holes than you might imagine and we’ll help you
sidestep the biggest ones!
During this session you will learn how to…
-
Identify the kind of database you need to use
-
Manage your speaking and travel calendar
-
Surround yourself with the right advisors
-
Build the right kind of professional speaking contract
to protect you
-
Develop an effective pre-program questionnaire
-
Effectively identify your staffing needs to support your
efforts

Testimonials:
"Your
presentation at NSA was terrific! Your grasp of
the training business, client needs, and appropriate
processes for providing solutions is light years ahead
of anybody I know in your business."
- Don
Hutson, Past President, National Speakers Association
"Just a quick note to
say thank you. As a speaker for the last twenty-
two years I have picked up a few items that will be very
valuable. I
followed one of your tips and created two more speaking
engagements last week." -
Jim Brogan
"You are of a rare breed…a visionary
businessman at a young age who has stepped forward in an
industry where there is a lot of old style thinking. You
are a refreshing mix in this market…"
- Victoria Labalme
"I wanted to take this time to say how
much I appreciated the conference call on branding this
morning. Your approach came from a slightly different
direction that I had heard in the past. This was
refreshing and presented in a way to make me think and
then take action. Others have said some of the words and
yet your approach was significantly more powerful."
- Gregg Gregory
"Rick, Thanks for your excellent presentation.
Once again people were raving about your
presentation. Twice now you have gone above and
beyond for our Chapter. If we can ever do
anything as a group to help you in your
endeavors please let me know. Be well and thanks
for all of your terrific advice for me, it has
paid dividends immediately."
-
Corbin Ball, President National Speakers
Association-NYC
"Greetings. Thanks so much for inviting me to
the fantastic presentation that was given by the
extraordinary speaker and author, Rick Frishman.
Rick provided a wealth of invaluable
information."
- Sandy Wexler
"Out of nearly 300 instructors annually in New
York City , Rick Frishman ranked #1 according to
our on-line survey. Over 98% of his students
gave him a '10' out of '10'!"
- Steven Schragis, National Director Learning
Annex
"...I Rick Frishman was outstanding: bright,
funny and very generous with information. I just
KNOW I will eventually get on Oprah! Another
reason I know it will happen is that, besides
the fact that I am now armed with plenty of info
on how to do it, I know how to manifest into my
life what I want."
- Mary Beth Spann Minucci
"If you could take $10,000 and turn it into
$100,000 in under two months, would you find
the $10K? Want to know how? Invest in Robin
Creasman's video production & coaching
services and enjoy the return!"
-
Vince Poscente CSP, CPAE (Speaker Hall of
Fame)
"Robin, You took a vague concept, that was
in my head, and you made it 20 times better
with your creative abilities. Your demo
video has launched me to being one of the
top speakers in North America in my price
range. I'll definitely use your talents for
my next demo video. You were able to see the
best of what I have, and share it. Thank
you. For anyone still weighing the decision
of whether Robin's end product will give you
a return, I wish to emphasize that this
is
your KEY marketing piece,
your
demo-video. Robin will make it
the next best thing to live."
- Sincerely, Cary Mullen, Two-time Olympian
and World Cup Downhill Champion
"Robin Creasman is an amazing speaker coach
- he works on both the content and
performance of your speech. But unlike a lot
of "speaker coaches" out there, he really
knows what he's doing, understands the
marketplace, has great taste and follows
through. I believe he is truly invested in
my personal growth and success. Robin helps
you stand out in the marketplace and working
with him was a great experience. I felt
relieved to have a partner who really knows
the business. He's a friend and someone I
hope to work with on a long-term basis."
