CNBC’s On The Money
regarding the fees that celebrities and
former politicians receive for speaking
engagements.
The program, which was broadcast
June 15, 2006, examined the trend of
universities and colleges paying
significant fees to individuals such as
Bill Cosby, Katie Couric and Bill
Clinton as part of their commencement
exercises.
The feature was in response to former
President Bill Clinton’s recent
acknowledgment that he was paid nearly
7.5 million dollars last year in
speaking fees.
Mr. Gardner was asked if using highly
paid celebrity speakers was a trend in
the university market. He responded that
the university market is only the tip of
the iceberg. “Depending on whose numbers
you believe, speaking and training is a
50 billion-dollar industry and it is
growing.”
