Alyson
Beytien

Alyson Beytien is a nationally-known, popular speaker on Autism
Spectrum Disorders. She specializes in Keynote addresses or
workshops for educators, support personnel, medical professionals,
caregivers, and families. Alyson is a mother of three children with
autism. She is a consultant and trainer for school systems
throughout the country on educating individuals with autism.
Alyson has a degree in Early Childhood Special Education and is in
the Masters Autism program at the University of Kansas. She is the
moderator of a DVD training series, "Family to Family: A Guide to
Living Life When a Child is Diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum
Disorder".
She is also a columnist for the Autism Spectrum Quarterly magazine
and host of the web/radio program “Family to Family" on
AutismOne.org. In her spare time (is there such a thing?) she
quilts, gardens, reads voraciously, and thinks of behavior plans in
her sleep!
Her knowledge of the latest treatment and intervention theories
combined with her twelve years of practical experience is shared
with the audience. Her warm personality and infectious humor
punctuates her candid discussion of serious issues in a manner that
engages, entertains, and educates. Through her personal stories,
your group will gain practical coping skills that instill
confidence.
George
McKenna

George McKenna III was born in New Orleans, Louisiana into a family
that was steeped deeply in the culture and history of the city. At
the age of twenty, he received a B.A. in mathematics from Xavier
University and was awarded a teaching fellowship to Loyola
University, where he earned an M.A. in mathematics. He also holds a
doctor of education degree from Xavier University.
In 1962, McKenna accepted a teaching position in the Los Angeles
Unified School District. While continuing his education at Loyola
University Law School; the University of California, Los Angeles;
and California State University at Los Angeles; McKenna remained a
teacher, working at both the secondary and college levels.
McKenna became principal of George Washington Preparatory High
School in 1979. At the time, this high school was one of the most
notorious and violent in Los Angeles, replete with gangs, drug
dealing and gun fights. McKenna and his reform tactics turned George
Washington Preparatory High School around, transforming it from a
failing institution to one where nearly 80 percent of its graduates
went on to college.
McKenna's programs have been modeled throughout the nation. He has
served as a consultant to numerous school districts and law
enforcement agencies. He is also the author of several articles that
have appeared in local and national newspapers and educational
journals. McKenna has received more than 400 citations and awards
from civic, legislative and professional organizations. His work led
to his being the subject of the award-winning CBS movie, The George
McKenna Story, starring Denzel Washington.
In 1989, McKenna received the Congressional Black Caucus' Chairman's
Award and in 1997 was elected into the National Alliance of Black
School Educators' Hall of Fame.
Thomas
Armstrong

Thomas Armstrong, Ph.D. is an award-winning author and speaker with
over thirty years of teaching experience from the primary through
the doctoral level, and over one million copies of his books in
print on issues related to learning and human development. He is the
author of thirteen books including The Human Odyssey: Navigating the
Twelve Stages of Life, The Best Schools: How Human Development
Research Should Inform Educational Practice, Multiple Intelligences
in the Classroom, In Their Own Way, Awakening Your Child’s Natural
Genius, 7 Kinds of Smart, The Myth of the A.D.D. Child, ADD/ADHD
Alternatives in the Classroom, and Awakening Genius in the
Classroom. His books have been translated into twenty-two languages,
including Spanish, Chinese, Hebrew, Danish, and Russian.
He has written for Ladies Home Journal, Family Circle (where he
received awards from the Educational Press Association, and the
National Association of Secondary School Principals), Parenting
(where he was a regularly featured columnist for four years),
Mothering (where he was a contributing editor), and over thirty
other periodicals, journals, and edited books. He has appeared on
several national and international television and radio programs,
including NBC’s "The Today Show," "CBS This Morning," "CNN," the
"BBC" and "The Voice of America." Articles featuring his work have
appeared in The New York Times, the Washington Post, USA Today,
Investor’s Business Daily, Good Housekeeping, and hundreds of other
newspapers and magazines around the country.
Dr. Armstrong has given over 800 keynotes, workshop presentations,
and lectures in 42 states and 16 countries in the past nineteen
years. His clients have included Sesame Street, the Bureau of Indian
Affairs, the European Council of International Schools, the Republic
of Singapore, and several state departments of education.
Andy
Hargreaves

Andy Hargreaves is the Thomas More Brennan Chair in Education at the
Lynch School of Education at Boston College. The Brennan family, who
have endowed this professorship, have renamed it after their son who
died on the 104th floor of the World Trade Center on September 11,
2001. The mission of the Chair is to promote social justice and
connect theory and practice in education. Andy Hargreaves's teaching
and research at Boston College concentrates on sustainable
leadership, professional learning communities, educational change
and the emotions of teaching.
Andy Hargreaves grew up in a working class community in the small
Lancashire textile and engineering town of Accrington in England –
famous for its legendary football club, Accrington Stanley. Andy
went to school at Spring Hill Primary School where the teacher in
his last year, Mary Hindle, was one of his greatest sources of
inspiration to become an educator. The youngest of three brothers,
Andy was the first in his extended family history to move on to
higher education – studying sociology at Sheffield University.
Professor Hargreaves qualified for and went on to teach primary
school before studying for (and some years later) completing his
Ph.D. thesis in Sociology at the University of Leeds in England. He
then lectured in a number of English universities including Oxford
until in 1987 he moved to the Ontario Institute for Studies in
Education in Canada, where he co-founded and directed the
International Center for Educational Change. From 2000-2002, he was
also Professor of Educational Leadership and Change at the
University of Nottingham in England.
Professor Hargreaves has authored or edited more than 25 books which
have been translated into a dozen languages. Andy Hargreaves’ book
Teaching In The Knowledge Society: Education in the Age of
Insecurity, is published by Teachers’ College Press and Open
University Press and has received the Choice Outstanding Book Award
from the American Libraries Association for Teaching and the
American Educational Research Association Divison B Outstanding Book
Award. His new book with Dean Fink, Sustainable Leadership, is
published by JosseyBass/Wiley.
Andy now lives close to Boston, Massachusetts with his wife Pauline
who is also an educator. Their children, Stuart and Lucy, are in
their mid-20's, studying law and environmental policy.
Cheryl
Brown-Henderson

One of the three daughters of the late Rev. Oliver L. Brown, who, in
the fall of 1951, along with 12 other families, led by attorneys for
the NAACP, filed suit in behalf of their children against the local
Board of Education. Their case made its way all the way to the U.S.
Supreme Court and on May 17, 1954, became known as the landmark
decision; Brown v. The Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas. This
case was named for Oliver Brown, i.e., Oliver L. Brown et. al. vs.
The Board of Education of Topeka. Brown died in 1961 before knowing
the impact this case would have on the country.
Cheryl is currently serving as President and CEO of the Brown
Foundation for Educational Equity, Excellence and Research, which
she founded in 1988. She is the owner of Brown & Brown Associates,
an educational consulting firm and has an extensive background in
education, business and civic leadership, having served on and
chaired various local, state and national Boards. In addition she
has nearly two decades of experience in political advocacy, public
policy implementation and federal legislative development. She is
also an associate with the Westerly Group a public advocacy firm in
Washington, D.C.
Since its establishment, the Brown Foundation has provided
scholarships to forty minority students, presented awards to local,
state and national leaders and sponsored programs on diversity and
educational issues, for some 4000 people. In 1990, under her
leadership the Foundation successfully worked with the U.S. Congress
to establish the Brown v Board of Education National Park in Topeka,
scheduled to open in 2004. In 2001 under her leadership, the
Foundation successfully worked with the U.S. Congress to establish
the Brown v. Board of Education 50th Anniversary Presidential
Commission, which will serve to provide a Federal presence in the
2004 anniversary of the Brown decision.
On January 17, 1994, May 19, 1995 and May 2003 she was one of a
group of individuals invited to a reception at the White House in
honor of Dr. King and the Children of Civil Rights Movement and the
75th Anniversary, U.S. Department of Labor, Women's Bureau and 49th
Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, respectively.
Dr.
Cile Chavez

Dr. Cile Chavez is president of Cile Chavez Consulting, Inc., and
provides motivation and expertise to organizations in the private
and public sectors on Leadership and Human Development. Her services
include keynote speeches, seminars, in-depth retreats, and
individual coaching. Her passion is to guide others in realizing
their skills, talents, and potential in both their personal and
professional lives. She emphasizes the power of modeling integrity,
effective human relations, intelligent behavior, and enthusiasm. Her
unique mixture of humor, storytelling, ideas, and metaphors has
helped make her one of the most sought after speakers on
contemporary leadership issues and possibilities.
Cile has presented keynotes to more than 35 state school board and
administrator conferences and has been the keynote speaker twice at
the National Staff Development Council’s Annual Conference. Her
influence extends beyond the Continental U.S. to Brazil, Singapore,
The Philippines, Japan, England, and The United Arab Emirates
Cile served as Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent of Littleton
Public Schools; Assistant Dean of the College of Education,
University of Northern Colorado; and as Chair of the Board of
Trustees of the State Colleges of Colorado. She is the former
Colorado State Director of the North Central Association of Colleges
and Schools and President of the Colorado Association of Supervision
and Curriculum Development (ASCD).
Community organizations have benefited from Cile’s knowledge and
expertise on leadership and quality organizations through her
service as Trustee on boards such as the Denver Foundation, the
Greater Metro YMCA, the South Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce, the
Botanic Gardens, and the State Colleges of Colorado. These roles
lend credibility to her message on enlightened leadership.
In 2003 she was honored as a Woman of Distinction by the Mile Hi
Council of Girl Scouts. Cile has been named one of the top 100
educators in the U.S., and was a finalist for the Colorado
Superintendent of the Year award.
In June of 1996, Cheryl became the first African
American woman from Kansas to run for the U. S. House of
Representatives.
