Selling to Big Companies

Selling to Big Companies - Jill Konrath

When the best buyer for your product or service is a big company … what do you do? How can you get your foot in the door in order to gain the trust and respect of your big buyers? How do you keep your message from being just another voice in a huge sea of competition … in short how do you Sell to BIG Companies?

I've been selling to large companies for years so imagine my joy to discover Jill Konrath's easy-to-digest book Selling to Big Companies detailing the steps needed to get the attention of corporate decision makers. From personal experience I know that in good times, it is hard to reach corporate decision makers because everyone wants their money. In bad times it can be even harder because the players change more often and sales people who never bothered to call before need to call now. Gatekeepers are everywhere!

Reading this book, it seemed that the author really understood what it had taken me 15 years experience to learn – that you must have a value proposition that your customer cares about and you need to do business with your target in a way that matters to them … not to you. Next, you must have a system (she calls them a campaign) that is proven, measurable and repeatable. I was now convinced that Jill was an expert on complex sales strategies. Eagerly I jumped in to learn more. Her book is broken down into logical parts:

Part 1 – Accept the Challenge

Part 2 – Build the Foundation

Part 3 – Launch the Campaign

Part 4 – Break through Barriers

Part 5 – Advance the Sale

The book promised so much – how to target accounts that were more likely to want to hear what you have to say. How to find names of prospects, how to get their attention, how to overcome stalls and objections, how to become a valued resource and not someone after a buck, how to build momentum and how to separate yourself from the competition … was it just too good to be true?

Could one book make that much of a difference?

My answer is a resounding "Yes!" Take her advice and read the entire volume … then use the Account Entry Tool Kit in Appendix A to write and follow your own blueprint for success.  This step-by-step guide shows dramatically how you need to change in order to sell now – especially to big companies.

The Age of Speed, Learning to Thrive in a More-Faster-Now World

The Age of Speed, Learning to Thrive in a More-Faster-Now World

By Vince Poscente, Best-Selling Author and Business Leadership Speaker

World-class skier and Business Leadership Speaker, Vince Poscente, reaches out with his latest book to everyone who is "feeling trampled by the speed of life and business." When I first heard this, I became  nervous that the fireball of energy who once strapped himself to the top of a moving car in order to understand what it felt like to go as fast as an Olympic skier … the man who was willing to do what his competitors would not do … had become a softy writing about work/life balance.

I'm glad to say that I should not have worried. Vince definitely does not say that we all need to slow down and smell the roses. It's not that I'm against slowing down, I just don't think it is realistic when everything continues to move ahead so fast! Vince instead says that we need to stop dreading, ignoring or even fearing speed. Instead, he talks about very specific ways to harness the speed in order to get results.

The part that stuck with me the most was the metaphor of how speed can be harnessed, misused or ignored. Picture a zeppelin versus a jet and you quickly get the picture. It's a good analogy because we all sort of wonder why can two people at the same organization with basically the same skill set and same resources achieve such different results. Maybe it does come down to how each person faces the inevitable challenge of more information, faster turn arounds, higher expectation and more speed. So, what's a zeppelin to do? Can the ability to harness speed by learned? If so, how?

This book is full of great case studies which illustrate his point – harness speed in order to win, and as a bi-product you will be less stressed and more focused. I was very interested to read about how Netflix, Nintendo and GEICO all used speed to not only gain and sustain competitive advantage, it also increased client and employee engagement. Many of the "rules" we all learned in the 80s and 90s are debunked with data to back up his counter-intuitive insights. Think you've got it all figured out? Take some time to read this book and you will definitely learn a thing or two and I think you'll be glad you took the time.

The read is very fun --- and as you can imagine, fast. The bottom line is that he shows we have something hopeful ahead of in this new "more-faster-now" world. A path to even greater success.

Who Has Time To Read?

Who Has Time to Read? Written by Paige Turner

Lots of speakers write books to further their speaking careers and some are more useful than others in producing real-world top- and bottom-line results.

I tend to prefer authors who have "walked the talk" by either having achieved phenomenal personal success of who use scientific methodology to follow trends and best practices of other organizations who produce real results. In other words, I want to make sure that the book is worth my time.

Blogging is new to me, so I'm creating my own rules. In an effort of full disclosure, let me say that I book speakers for a living and so my motives for promoting any particular author or speaking may be suspect by some. I'm limiting my reviews of books that I have actually read and speakers who I have actually worked with professionally. It's all just my educated opinion, but hopefully it may add some insight to speakers and author who will help your group reach new heights.

For my first subject, I'm choosing Jim Welch. Jim is the former Chief Marketing Officer from Hallmark Cards. I've worked with him about six times over the past 12 months. His recently released book, Grow Now ... 8 Essential Steps to Flex Your Leadership Muscles is an informative read but I would not say that it is an easy book that you whip through on an airplane. It takes some thinking. It's published by Powerhouse, LLC, but I'm not a publishing house snob, so the smaller press didn't keep me from reading more.

Before I even read the book, I admit that I liked the title. As a Type A achiever, it is appealing to think that there is a neat checklist of 8 items that once addressed will lead to ... well, leadership.

Another neat little tool that Jim incorporates is each Chapter concludes with a Hurdle Test to see if you actually understand the concepts from the previous chapter well enough to advance to the next one. Reminded me a little of textbooks, but it helped me make sure I would actually use the information he was giving me. Plus, he outlines 30-, 60- and 90-day Action Items around each concept. Again, it's a cool way to make yourself accountable.

One thing I wish it had was a bulleted Executive Summary to help me get into it. Alas, I have very little attention span anymore, and I did find that I had to really think about what he had to say and how to apply it. The concepts were not difficult, but they are very thorough and if you try to skim through them, you will find that you miss a lot of the value.

So is it worth the time?

I say yes, even though it is not easy. The big take a ways - are how to make the emotional connections with your current and prospective team members and clients that gives you an advantage in growing your business.

He doesn't advocate a Touchy Feely Philosophy of Kum ba Ya. He just states that people make or break you, and if they know you care about them and their success, then they will care for your success.

He even addresses specifically how to make this emotional connection to people of different generations - a very hot topic now given that for the first time ever, we have four generations in the workforce. Other issues related to the emotional connection include finding top talent, fostering innovation, executing on strategy, rewarding performance, listening to your staff and customers, and much more.

There is a wealth of great information that I would say applies to anyone who is leading a group of people or who aspires to do that job. EVEN if you have very little time, my tip is to read each chapter's Hurdle Test and the 30- 60- and 90-day plans for growth. Find those areas where you can make the biggest difference and dive in.

Ladies, Saddle Up to Success!

Ladies, Saddle Up to Success! Written by Paige Turner

A big buzz word for 2008 is seems to be Accountability. I hear this a lot from my clients – they want a speaker who can teach their (INSERT JOB TITLE HERE) how to be more "accountable."

Buzz words are kind of fun to me. They come and go like the swallows of Capistrano.  Remember when we were all going to be "empowered" then we needed to be "innovative" later we were told to make sure we had "balance" between our job and work and today as the economy gets tough again we need to be "accountable."

Actually, I like this buzz word and hope it sticks around awhile. Victim thinking never appealed to me. I am drawn to people who don't wait for someone to show them how to be successful. They just find a way to BE successful.

That's the theme behind Saundra Pelletier's book, Saddle Up Your Own White Horse. In the very first line, she puts out the challenge that if you would not give your life a grade of B+ or better, then you need to make changes! Her book is aimed at women, and I think it is a quick and enlightening read for any woman whether she is beginning her career or a seasoned "veteran."

This book is not a Feminist Manifesto or Anti-Male. It does break down five things that all women (and maybe some guys) should do in order to be truly accountable to their own success.

In the book, she explores:

Your Attitude about Yourself

What you understand about the characteristics of what it means to be a woman

How you relate to men

How you relate to other women

How you relate to success – power, prosperity, etc.

The main premise is that woman are their own worst enemies when it comes to self promotion. We are wonderful caregivers and multi-taskers but don't always consider how our actions are viewed – and valued – by others. Most important too many women struggle with feelings of guilt or resentment but are not sure what to do about it.

The part I liked most was her message that putting your self first is actually the least selfish thing you can do for those you really care about it your life.

Out Wit and Out Survive

You cannot escape Politics in 2008 … it's everywhere you go.  But for this blog, I'm not talking about Democrats and Republicans. These politics don't take place in Iowa or New Hampshire or over Super Duper Tuesday. These are the politics that everyone who works in any organization staffed with human beings must contend with. This is Office Politics and how to successfully navigate these often murky waters.

The book we're talking about today is Survival of the Savvy, High-Integrity Political Tactics for Career and Company Success – the name seemed like an oxymoron to me at first. ARE office politics really high-integrity? And is so, does anyone who takes that path actually succeed in business?

The answer according to Co-authors Rick Brandon, PhD and Marty Seldman, PhD is that YES, it is possible to follow these guidelines AND still build a career. The Darwinian approach to Survival of the Fittest examines power plays, turf wars, back stabbing and other less-than-desirable tactics that people may use, but why in the end they will no longer pay off.

One thing I really liked about their approach to ethical and profitable business was the Style Strength Finder tool that allows you to indentify political styles at work. This awareness of where you stand can determine if you need to change any behaviors – either by ramping up or down your political agenda.

In this age of highly viral communication, this book also shows you how to take the temperature on your own corporate buzz and then manage that message in a way that helps the company and you.

Most of all, I loved how it shows you how to see what is really there versus what you simply want to see regarding the political landscape. There are very specific ways:

  • To build networks
  • To promote and protect your ideas
  • See through misleading information from your boss, your peers and your subordinates
  • Increase your groups impact
  • Influence by circumventing the problems that build silos and plague growth

So …. This book is well worth the read and time. Lots of real-world take aways and no Polyanna pie-in-the-sky platitudes. Not hard to get through and I'd recommend it definitely to high potentials who may be beginning their management career.
